Funniest joke ever!

Seen on Slashdot:

imagine my surprise (Score:5, Funny) by friedman101 (618627) on Tuesday July 31, @12:10AM (#20043793)
After the market damage from last week my broker sent me this IM IN UR PORTFOLIO SHORTING UR GUGULS

As usual, the sheer amount of internet-based urban/geek subculture you need to be aware of to understand this joke is astounding.

I had a very nice day today, and can only hope I remember enough about it to make a good blog post tomorrow.

I for one

... get really, seriously creeped out every time anybody shoves his (or her) gun down their pants. I mean, seriously, those are tight jeans! And that's a loaded weapon! In your pants! Pointed at your groin!

Maybe it's like memories of Eight Mile or something. Brr.

In other news, today was boring. Again. And I didn't really feel like Civ-ing or anything. So basically was just sitting around feeling sorry for myself. Oh, and finishing catching up on QC, so now I've got to wait to see what happens next, just like everybody else. Man, what a pain.

Borrowed movies at half-price today (yay VideoEzy!). Hope to go back tomorrow for me, as it's the last day for half-price rentals (but only if you've gotten this extra-special SMS, I should probably add before you all run down at once). Which makes me feel a little better, I guess. Hmn, hmn.

I will finally get to see The Godfather, though, so it's not all bad. I guess.

Plan for the evening: call Anu, watch movie, take bath, go sleep. Mmmm, sleep.

Zomg interview tomorrow! Let's see how it goes. The key, as always, is to not panic.

Bored

Al Pacino's AFI Lifetime Achievement Award was on a good couple of hours ago. That was cool. Must be real cool to have that sort of function thrown for you, I guess. Everybody was really nice about it, too, no over-the-top OMG-HE-IZ-DA-KINGZ type dialogue or anything, blessed relief. Lots of fun, lots of jokes, lots of take-downs and nasty humour. I guess when you're at Mr. Pacino's level of career achievement, you can kid about them as much as you like because you know there isn't a chance in hell that anybody's going to take you seriously.

So, ah, life at the moment isn't much for the movements. It's almost two, and I'm dead sleepy (blessed relief), but other than that life is stagnant like a tiny fetid pond. Also the reading of much Questionable Content content isn't doing much good for me at all. So last night, I dreamt I was cycling around Bombay with a girl. No girl in particular, just a hypothetical concept-of-one type thing. And I was cycling! So obviously today I'm all "hmm what would it cost to get back to cycling and oh yeah I wonder where and how I can find a girl". I should probably go back to reading The Year ... Reis again: that's a good book to read at times like this, when you're wondering whether just sitting around doing nothing is in anyway a good way to get on with life (hint: it isn't, but this book will let you in on that slowly, with plenty of buffering and philosophy and literary references and everything). Which hopefully means I eventually (and quickly?) hit the bit where I'm just way too bored with the whole thing to not do something about it, so then I do do something about it, and then - gargh! - have to go back round to step 1. Ah, you know how it is, how it goes, right?

Also this video is pretty good, and I know I should probably listen to more than 1 minute of it before recommending it on but, you know what, it's the 00s, it does have to be good, it just has to be new (or obscure), either way.

Blbhlhlhblbhlh whatever. I guess I should just go and (try to) sleep or something. Y'know, give me something to do and all.

Alea iacta est

So. In the middle of this whole pretty dismal job-hunting session, I've had to turn down a really good, interesting, well-paying job because it doesn't fit in with what I want to be doing. For better or for worse, it is definitely behind me now.

Bah, humbug.

Hahaha

This is pretty much exactly the sort of black humour you'd expect from the people behind DrMcNinja. Good stuff. And the QC storyline is going fine, too!

Life is confusing and mildly depressing right now. Sigh.

Hah.

So, my TV set top box stopped working. Grr. Running around, called for help, etc. etc. And then, it goes and fixes itself once the rain stops. Seriously, what the heck?! Now I have to call up tomorrow and cancel the help. Otherwise, they'll charge me for coming.

Blech.

Same again

Life is getting very repetitive these days. I'll wake around 10am, get some grub with the guys, watch TV, check to see how many of my applications have been rejected, then play Civ for a while. I'm watching a lot of Russia: Land of the Tsars, while it lasts, because it inspires me to play Civ.

Also: (standard don't-read-this-unless-you've-already-read-Questionable-Content disclaimer here) he probably was!

Okay, going to be somewhat productive now and make sense of my finances now. Ciao!

Started badly, ended really nice

Morning and afternoon were very bleah. I got up around 10ish, wandered around some, wandered around some more. Highlights: leading a semi-successful war against the Japanese, eating brownie+vanilla ice cream. Mmmm.

Evening, though, was amazing, because I got to see (but not photograph, curses!) something amazingly beautiful: The moon, Venus and Saturn all next to each other! Venus and the moon were literally beside each other, a completely (or almost) new moon, with pretty much only the disk visible, except it was bright enough that it wasn't completely black?, like a light ghostly gray? And right next to it, Venus, bright as can be, and as stunning as any Greek goddess or Elbereth. I mean, really, I can't remember the last time I've seen Venus so incredibly beautiful. And a little dot just horizonwards of the moon, which was - surprise! - Saturn!

I mean, wow. By tomorrow, the conformation would have changed entirely. Unbelievable. I hope photos of this turn up on APOD, and I'm forever going to curse myself for not going back to the house for a camera.

Also: (do not read if you haven't read Questionable Content! Major spoilers here!) isn't this the most beautiful set of panels ever? It's totally adorable, really. Do NOT click through if you haven't read QC from the beginning - it'll spoil a lot of the fun for you, I can tell you that. There really is something cool about the 500 strips of suspense he puts you through before you get to this point. And that's just half of the strips to date! Zomg fun. Although my heart is, just for the record, still with Queen of Wands. Let's see, let's see, ah, fun times, fun times.

Coming up next: calling Anu in Delhi, chilling out for a while, then going to bed. Mmmm, bed. I still need to clean up my room, though. Goshdarnit.

I really don't want to do this ...

... 'cos it's 10am on a Tuesday, and I am poofed. After my aptitude test yesterday afternoon, I just completely chilled for the rest of the day, which explains why I'm waking up with a headache today (no, not a hangover - too much oil. Don't ask).

Anyway, while I'm waiting for my shower-water to heat up so I can get in and become human again, I figure I might as well post the following in case the computer crashes or whatever:

Wonder what happens today?

Zomg yay!

So, I impulse-bought Civilization IV today. My first Civ game in *ages*, literally years.

And how does it feel?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghbutitfeels GOOD!

:D

Don't have much to say. The game itself is so-so: jumping from X to Y and back to X gives me headaches (I was organizing a campaign just now: omg it was a pain! It was like playing an RTS game without features like "rally points" and queues and so on: you had to keep ordering your cities to produce more, and after your queues were depleted, you had to go back 'round and give everybody orders again, and if you were in the middle of a major action while you were doing it. And, err, can you not destroy buildings any more? Other than that, things which are new - city placement, unit characteristics (how do you deal with Civ when there's no Phalanx? No caravels? No triremes? Omg!), and style of combat are taking me some time to get used to, but it's not too bad, i guess. It's still a lot of fun, although it feels really different in many ways.

Sigh. What a lot of crap. I spew. Still, it is so incredibly amazingly cool to be doing this stuff again :).

Whee!

Going out in style

As someone who thinks about death a whole lot more than he should, Ray Jutkin's story is quite something. The man held a "wake" for himself after the doctors had pronounced his imminent death (although he lived for almost a year before he finally succumbed to his leukemia).

What a cool way to go. It must have been so incredibly hard on his family to watch him go, though. Thcah.

And, err, also

I've always wondered how people can get it together to make this sort of leap into the unknown. Scary stuff.

Two things
  1. I am really, really, really dead sleepy. Like, dead sleepy. Should I just go home and hit the sack? Should I try and work it off? More caffeine? And what about food? Yes, no, maybe? And-nd-nd should I actually go in to lab today? Or ... sigh. So much to think about, it's all a bit too much to process right about now. Am very tempted to just go to sleep for a while, then wake up and figure things out all over again.
  2. I found a beautiful little piece on Wabi-sabi linked to from Slashdot. Haven't finished reading it yet, so I won't give an opinion, but on first glance it sounds like something I'd approve of entirely.

Things I have to say

I will try and let you know if today is as awesome as I hope it will be. But I might be too busy to notice! Or care!

Yeah, right.

5am again

This time, though, I've both gotten a little sleep, and am well fed and all that. So it's in a pretty nice mood that I'm sitting in the living room, listening to all this music I haven't heard in *ages* ('cos of Karanth's speaker issues, right?). Man, are these beautiful songs. Babu Samjho Ishare is playing, and Memory is coming up soon, followed by Any Dream Will Do. Beautiful, beautiful!

Tomorrow (err, today; like, in another few hours or so) I'm planning on going to lab. Try (probably unsuccessfully) to get some stuff done, I guess. I'm still in midthought on the whole but-but-but-I-don't-like-programming thing. Seriously. I'm really worried about what my folks are going to think if I get an unappetizing job description like "Shipping Clerk" or something, and I. assures me that it's not a good job. But I have to start at the bottom, don't I? And I'd really like a job where I get to do things, not just make pretend things happen on computer screens. Where all my frustrations aren't the result of somebody else's design decisions. I mean, I want to be like the ship captains of old (or, err, now, I guess), where you're doing the best you can with what you've got. That's the kind of functioning (I think) I've always liked. Plus, that way, I can leave work at work, where right now - no, well, okay, that's not a valid complaint, I guess.

I still need to keep the Mac shareware dream alive, otherwise I won't have anything to do in case none of my applications work out (out of 8 applications, only two people have even looked at my resume thus far; one has rejected me, the other has put me "on hold"). I mean, if it comes down to that, I'd much rather be working on my own than working for anybody else.

Ah, here's Memory now :). It's nice to know that however horrible things might be (and trust me, they haven't even started getting horrible yet), you can always put on a song like this and just feel the beauty of the music.

Karanth complaining

My old computer, Karanth, is finally(!) starting to show his age. At almost five years of age (with pretty much continuous use throughout - he's still my check-mail-and-blog computer, after Bathgadhtsey has been put away for the night), he hadn't yet shown any problem I couldn't blame on Linux compatibility (i.e. CD drive stopped working, sound stopped working, Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) stopped working). At long last, and after much overwork, the "," key on my keyboard has finally given out. And by given out, I mean *gone* out. Like, fallen off. Literally. How cool is that?

Am finally getting a hang of Objective C. Man, it's quite something. I can't figure out if it's amazingly *good* or amazingly *bad* yet, though. I mean, outlets instead of getDlgItem()? On the other hand, I can get over neither Objective C's own prettiness, nor the way IB manages window resizings.

Was chatting with Rohit today, and he made the very good point that it's not much use going the whole publish-my-own-software route if I really wanted out of programming, which makes sense. Hmmm.

Have just realised that the "," key cover is on the key NEXT to the "," key. I can't remember switching that around today! Did that happen today at all, or has it been around forever and I just never noticed? Creepy!

New comix only

Also, some webcomics I should add to, err, well - where-ever it is I'm going to put blogs from now on. I guess.

And if you're up at 4am, without a thought in your head and nothin' to do, may I recommend a dose of Dinosaur Comics, easily one of the most consistantly funny comics I've ever seen? Hitting 'random' over and over again is a popular game when there's better things to do.

Hello, 7am!

Yes, once again approached from the wrong side again. Heaven help us.

I did finally get to watch Melinda and Melinda in full: nothing great, but it had it's moments. The plots ended up a little weird, I thought, and I was very disappointed when Will Ferrell's character slowly devolved into Woody Allen. I mean, Woody Allen! In a movie based in Manhatten! With, like, crazy artsy stuff all over. I mean, you could literally - semi-unconsciously, even - imagine him out, and insert Woody in his place, and it would all make a whole lot more sense. Turns out, with good reason: Mr. Allen having directed the movie and all. Still, entertaining enough for 4am, and that's good enough for me.

Also got to finally pick up my Spanish book! Good fun, even if agua is a little hard to swallow at first (so it's: el agua? Although 'agua' is male? But when you pluralise it, it slips back into las aguas? What on earth ... ?!)

So, basically, yeah, the only part of my life not going so swell is the whole money-making side of things? Great, just great.

The witness of mine own eyes.

'tis in the slightest exactly as was suppos'd: the mind and shape of the machine is as a wonder to behold, a beauty it has, a certain grace and bearing, that puts one in mind of awe as one approacheth, and that keeps one entranc'd long past the first contact. 'Tis naught but the work of a master designer, and yet in this day and age of consum'r and dirtyquick tools and technique that one so rarely sees such a masterpiece. Truely am I entranced, and 'twas the witness of my own eyes which convinced met.

And yet, and yet. Almost unconsciously - for the beauty of it, perhap - I reach for Alt-1, Alt-2. Naught do I reach for, but still wish for, the simplicity of Ctrl-Z (open new xterm). For a million reasons such as this will I keep my belov'd Karanth, five years old if a day, until he be living no more.

Such thoughts, though, bring forth to me hope, not despair. Such imperfections within this masterpiece are verily the instigator, the niche into which perhaps I could slip and hide, and code and wait. Let us see - there's so little to do, and so much time to do it in. No, wait. Reverse it. Okay, much better. Thank you.
