Backlist

Leopard, as you may know, does the incredibly smart move of moving the RSS reader into exactly the right place: into the inbox. (Admittedly, Opera's been doing that forever. But I've never much liked Opera's mail reader in general. And the total-backup of the e-mail here is sweet. But that's another story.

Anyway, one of the nice side-effects of that is forcing me to read all the friends' blog entries I've (accidently or otherwise) not read for months. One of the best so far is Janani's memories of a friend. Beautifully written, definitely worth the ten minutes it'll take to finish.

Sharon 1.0 just died in BSG season two on my television. How beautiful is that scene, too. Lovely, lovely.

Oh and another thing

Saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off again today, after absolutely forever. Such joyful film-making and acting! Still undecided about whether to buy the DVD (or rather, when to buy the DVD), but probably sooner rather than later, the Amazon-purchase-hold holding back things for a while, though, thankfully. Still, the Ferrari's final scene is one of the few completely laugh-out-loud scenes in moviedom as far as I'm concerned, and so many cute scenes make up the movie - Cameron giggling when caught looking at Sloane naked, the view from the tower, the scene in the restaurant, and the fantastic parade sequence (oh shake it up, baby now ... !), which is only helped by the vocal contribution of Messrs Lennon and company.

I also saw A Shot in the Dark, and - so far - am fairly disappointed. I don't suppose I'll ever appreciate Mr. Edwards' comedy style, and Mr. Sellers seems too unsurefooted and off his usual genius to really make Clouseau work in this movie. Oh well; I suspect the second half might be better. I'm starting to appreciate Mr. Chaplin's movies more in retrospect, particularly "Modern Times", which I've been wishing to re-see. Compared to Mr. Edwards' long, drawn-out comedic situations in which coincidence, accident and surprise lead to the funnies, Mr. Chaplin's tightly knit gags, taking a normal, everyday occurance and exaggerating it beyond belief into supernatural funnies gets me happier. Oh well, perhaps it's best not to think too much about these things, merely to laugh and move on; perhaps?

Also, also: tried to call a friend in Bombay tonight. Didn't happen, will call tomorrow, but appear to have missed my cousin brother yet again. Oh well, so it goes. Another week can't hurt, and perhaps I will e-mail him instead or goodness gracious me write? Suddenly everything seems so possible again, somehow! The logical combination of Ferris Bueller and Evangelion, perhaps? Haha, craziness.

Since I've gone on this long: a friend of mine also wrote a pretty funny entry on her blog just now. Go read!

I really don't want to do this ...

... 'cos it's 10am on a Tuesday, and I am poofed. After my aptitude test yesterday afternoon, I just completely chilled for the rest of the day, which explains why I'm waking up with a headache today (no, not a hangover - too much oil. Don't ask).

Anyway, while I'm waiting for my shower-water to heat up so I can get in and become human again, I figure I might as well post the following in case the computer crashes or whatever:

Wonder what happens today?

Things I have to say

I will try and let you know if today is as awesome as I hope it will be. But I might be too busy to notice! Or care!

Yeah, right.

New comix only

Also, some webcomics I should add to, err, well - where-ever it is I'm going to put blogs from now on. I guess.

And if you're up at 4am, without a thought in your head and nothin' to do, may I recommend a dose of Dinosaur Comics, easily one of the most consistantly funny comics I've ever seen? Hitting 'random' over and over again is a popular game when there's better things to do.

On my way home

So, back home again. So it goes, so it goes. Not that I'm complaining or anything: it's been one long, exciting, interesting vacation. Seriously. No complaints.

Not that I'm going to be all that sad going back, either. There's things to be done, small things, big things, the whole scheboodle. Mainly, getting (back?) onto my feet post June 21, although that's only one angle to what is, at the end of the day, a very large, complicated puzzle. But hey. I've got - do I, really? - time.

I suppose if I don't know -- then when? When else, but now?

Not that this is, y'know, It. Not by any stretch of the imagination, and particularly not after this particular trip (aiyee, the lectures!). But, hopefully, this will an interesting path, which will lead on to - to? - well, to God alone knows what. But - as mentioned - an interesting road, nonetheless. Surely, something to learn, something to write home about. Lesse, lesse.

Other news? Sigh. Don't want to sleep - it's been a long day, and tomorrow's going to be worse, and sleep just seems like such an interlude in such matters. That I really am pretty exhausted doesn't, surprisingly, actually help. That I really have no idea what to do next (in both the grand sense of Next, as well as the immediate sense of next) doesn't do much for my nerves, and hence sleep, either.

Heh. I know what I'll do. I'll exercise. I'll quit my job and go off and exercise for a while. Lesse, lesse.

In passing: a pro-Singapore blog post for once, and the Auditor-General's report in Singapore. Also a painfully honest post on bullying. Challenge you to read this without cringing, at least. Extremely well written, too, see this bit:

When people hurt me, I became upset. I cried. This only handed her more ammunition. I was, she said, a crybaby. And others agreed with her. I was sensitive.

Being sensitive is even worse than "having a good vocabulary."

I wish I could advise her (him?), but I really don't know what to say. I've been bullied, but never ever half as bad as that. I'll go back to it tomorrow or day after, and think about it some, maybe. Meanwhile, if you have anything to say, go and say it. It's never too late the save the world entire.

So much more

There have been some amazing photos on Astronomy Picture of the Day lately. Most astounding: this relatively indescript photo of Gliese 581, a star harbouring the most earth-like planet found outside the solar system. And in between, some joker decided to re-run the blue marble photograph. I don't suppose that photo ever gets old.

And then today's was this amazing photo of a possible dark matter ring, taken by the redoubtable Hubble Telescope. Look at that! Galaxies! I mean, wow.

In other news, I'd completely forgotten about the family website until my Dad reminded me, so now there's a post on everywhere we went in London up now. Took a while to get all those links working, mind. I need to add in the 'family' photos to the bar on top of the website, too, and maybe a couple new posts about ... well, anything, I guess.

Mr. Munroe has an amazing map of online communities on xkcd now. I love how it's a subtle manipulation of the Asian east coast! Singapore is right by the Bay of Angst, just sound of Xanga, while India is entirely covered by Classmates.com. Speaking of which, have you heard about Mr. Munroe's recent run-in with the MIT folks. Obviously, as per his request, he is being pelted by the algorithm from Jersey. While the effect the algorithm might have on normal people, it's effect on fictionals are well-established: the algorithm is believed responsible for the death of "Ask Jeeves" from the Internet several yoinks ago.

IndieHIG is a project designed to come up with an independent set of human interface guidelines. Interesting.

Yet another in the long line of redshirt jokes. Nicely done.

And, to round things off, this brilliantly cute comic about adulthood from the recently mentioned Mr. Munroe, him of the algorithm.

So now

To start off, this crazy country never stops surprising me. And this post is interesting, if a little drawn out and tedious.

There is good news. The weather is finally turning: I could have slept without aircon or a fan tonight if I was so inclined.

There is, also, bad news. Both last week and this week so far have been tedious, boring weeks without much to recommend them. Last week was spent trying to catch up on Singapore time, the weekend on catching up on sleep, and this week catching up on work from last week. I woke up today at 2pm from right in the middle of a dream, which is always awful because your mind is all over the place and all you (well, I) can do is sit and wait for it to gather itself together. Ugh.

This might be a reaction to London. London's full of little alleyways which wind off in odd directions: it's a walker's paradise, with a million roads to walk down and discover something new. Chelsea or Southwark could keep me happily occupied for years. Singapore just doesn't have that, except maybe for bits in Bugis. Otherwise, it's HDBs far as the eye can see.

I know (hope?) that I'm just looking at the bad side, and the good side's going to pop up at me soon enough and all that. The one positive hope is that I am bored; generally, this leads to me doing something about the boredom, which last for a good while. Of course, it won't be that straightforward: expect another extension when I fly home (Bombay-Calicut-Bombay-Pune-Bombay - in just over a week, no less!). But - no, wait, BUT! - as of June 21, 2007, I am unemployed again. Good stuff.

I am really, really, really looking forward to that.

Links

To begin: I've been reading way too much of The Straight Dope lately. It must be fun to get to research stories such as swearing in multiple languages, the meaning of the word 'callipygian', the meaning of the word 'colitas', and what Barney Rubble did for a living. Of course, you do get the occasional doozie.

Special mention to Larry Walters, the legendary helium-baloon-and-lawn-chair flier, even though his life seems pretty sad, too.

TSD's 'list' page also has some pretty cool links, too, such as a rather odd Windows bug (long fixed).

Also: Happy 17th Birthday, Hubble!

I'm off to London day-after-tomorrow night, so everything's going to be very quiet around here for a while. Hopefully, I'll still get to upload onto Flickr a lot: I just hope I don't trip my monthly limit, and that I get time to sort out my photos eventually!

Links, links, more links

Indian cricket, watching cheese age, writing that all-important first novel, Purity Balls (which don't really work, surprise, surprise), and things you used to believe as kids.

And OMG what was he thinking? I mean, seriously; who writes like that?

Last but not least: The Sopranos: six seasons in seven minutes.

This is the second day in a row that I'll be going in to work early. Yay! But lack of sleep is also an issue. Last night: 6 hours, so while it's nothing to get happy about, it's not a total disaster, either. And then stayed up and played Halo (sorry, that's finished Halo) with Ifti, so that was fun too.

Things to read

Such as: apparently, the original "Wear Sunscreen" article (really a column in the Chicago Tribune).

Or: Working for the Man by Jeremy Allison, a brilliant article about what you need to succeed in programming. And the related discussion on Slashdot, which has some very nice articles.

That's about it for tonight. Thinking on the BetterExplorer thingie is going nicely. Slept most of today, which was nice. Mmmm, sleep.

Sleepy

So, here we go again; dead sleepy at 8am. Fun for the whole family.

There's a lovely essay I just read about creative inspiration and copyright, i.e.: if you borrow characters from another writer, are you stealing, etc. Nice.

Am vaguely considering just staying up all day. Apart from the danger of staying up at night because of the Bangladesh/Bermuda cricket match. Also, did you know that hauling sand to the beach could get you in trouble? As usual, there's plenty of weekend career worries, brought on by a combination of having to call home on Sunday and having way too much free time to think about such things on the weekend. Of course, going into work, say, now, instead of lying in my slowly chilling room moping might be a good idea, too. And getting my lamp fixed so I can read a book before sleeping ... yeah, it's possible. Certainly possible, for sure.

On the other hand, these more and more frequent day-night-day attempts can't be good for my health. God, my health. I honestly haven't thought about that in ages.

Nothing to report

This is pretty weird, but really, not hardly out of place in India at all. No, what's really weird is the fact that Virgin Comics' Chief Creative Officer has a singularly appropriate name.

Also: how weird is this? How weird is that?! Wow.

Anything else to report? Not really. TaxonDNA is chugging along - a lot of interesting new features are going in, as well as some truely ancient bugs being fixed Which is nice. I've been at lab all night, so maybe I'll get some time off tomorrow, giving me a chance to catch up with odds and ends: probably not the passport stuff, but some of the paper stuff, hair cuts, phone fix-ups, etc. Well, actually, the visa dept has pretty respectable opening hours, so, you know, maybe.

Let's see! It's such a relief to feel like I actually have time! Real, live, actual, living time!

Things and things

There's a really amazingly beautiful video on eye donations. If you want to take your eyes to the grave, you need to watch it. As long as I'm a Singapore PR, I'm covered: Singapore has the legal right to remove four organs from me (cornea, liver, kidney, heart) after death. Dodginess, and a huge privacy violation, and whatnot; and I'd try to make a huge fuss about this, if it wasn't what I wanted (personally, for myself) anyway.

Sometimes - like just then - I wonder what I'm doing in this crazy country anyway. Then somebody plays "Chariots of Fire" at full volume at 1am (and by Full Volume, I mean, the entire friggin' S1A/S2/S3 complex would have been able to hear it), and it doesn't seem quite so bad after all.

Other stuffs: something for celebrities, a brilliant article on cricket-love in India, a scary story (this is Bangalore! my family is there!, etc.), and look at the pretty little wiggles!

I swear, I've had this page open through most of this week; when the work got too frustrating for me, I'd just look at it and remind myself that however bad things got, I could always use a regular expression to keep myself moving where others might have had to stop. It's my secret weapon :).

Btw, same guy just played the Für Elise. Very cool.

Sigh, linkies again.

Cute! Insightful. So true. Ha, ha! Interesting.

Aaaannndd ... this is so cool, it gets a separate paragraph all to itself; it's the coolest comment I've seen on Slashdot in a while. So without further ado, near-death-incidents and MRIs.

Quickly now

How cute is this? How funny is that? I need to see who wins, and to take part in this. How cool is that, and I'll have to remember Randal's guide next time I'm teaching someone Perl, speaking of which, did you know he's off the hook?

There's more, but I can't be bothered to link to everything. A very angsty post by Popagandhi. Half-price off some very nice and interesting books from Lonely Planet. That's about it, I guess.

Back to my almost-done-since-forever parser for Nexus files, I guess =/.
