Birthday 2007

Thus far: spectacular space photograph (and yesterday's ain't so bad, neither!), a phone call from Janani, and dinner out (in a half hour or so) with lab mates. Not too bad a start to a couple of days of fun!

I'd like to buy some Magnatune music to celebrate, but can't find anything good enough ... atleast, not yet!

Ho, hum

Pretty boring day, as it goes. One of those days where you wonder whether anything interesting ever happens to people in Springfield, while all the while there's a buzz going on in the background of things happening to other people.

Well, not all other people. Gerard (who lives here, by the way) just found out he'd been accepted at Brown University, the one place he'd been talking about going to for ages, in pretty much exactly the area of study he's most into. How brilliant is that?! Makes the whole post-July situation in our house get more interesting, obviously, but how much more interesting remains to be seen.

Sigh. I wish something majorly exciting happens to me, soon.

Jumping for joy?

Is there anybody else who gets put off by the blatant collectivist attitudes in the new Jumping for Joy ad? (It's playing in all the buses and so on, but you can also see it online (it's called "Jumping for Joy"). One of the things I liked about the old Total Defense ads was their focus on "each person doing their part", and ... sigh. Never mind. I suppose one must keep in mind that there are downsides to living on this island, too.

Saw Half Nelson in the theatre, then EuroTrip. Finished my wine. Shiraz is fine, if little strong, but the taste is amazing.

I'm woke up at 3:30pm or so, which is a bit of a bummer. Means I'll have to do a lot of physical stuff to be able to get back to sleep on anything approaching normal time. Which probably means working on the family website is out of the question today, non?

Ah, well. Pehle snaan, baaki sab uske bad.

Nice music

Was just listening to Yello by Yongen and Surfacing by Roots Rebel. Not too shabby!

Lazy, semi-work day today so far. Hope I can stay in late and work on the family blog a bit.

Singaporean movies

Singaporean student films. And another Singaporean film (I think?).

Sigh. Such is life, sometimes.

Hey now

It's eight twenty in the morning, and I've been up all night (sleep schedules funky again, etc.). Funnily enough, it's the whole household: Gerard, Ifty and me were up until seven this morning, and watching House for the last hour or so of that. Consequent to the sleep dep and run around etc., I'm in a very blissful state at the moment, where everything seems like ... just the best it could all possibly be, all of it, stars and constellations across the infinite spaces of planet Earth.

Yay.

Finally!

I finally put my money where my heart was, and bought an album from the non-evil record label. It's Lisa DeBenedictis' album, Tigers. So, there. Will download MP3s to NUS tomorrow - I'm trying to get the Oggs for home, but somehow the zip isn't working :(.

Ifty's birthday today, went out of pizza to Sarpino's. Very nice pizza. Would have been a nicer day if I'd gotten up earlier =(. Still, got a just-less-than-fair-bit done, so, ummm. Yeah. Okay. Whatever. Tomorrow, then.

Wow.

Stumbled upon a website just now which provides a completely unexpected extra feature of Perl:

perl.exe is a process which will sit quietly in the background and block SPAM from your mailbox. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference.

Damn - that thing does everything, doesn't it?!

Today

Played a lot of Rome:TW, lost all my territory in the south of France (to the Julii!), but grabbed quite a fair bit of Germany (although a frontal assault ain't working thus far). Ah, well. Made myself a two-egg omlette, which is not good for my health, but I was hungry and there was nothing else available. The day was mostly wasted: Java sat upon my desktop, and I stared at it a while. I thought I saw a surprisingly bright star (a nova? a periodic star?), but it turned out to just be Antares.

Nothing else to report. Hope tomorrow's better. It's almost 6am now, so vaguely wondering whether it makes more sense to just stay awake and go through with the day, instead. Shrugs.

Heh

Geeks rule. Java still sucks, though, and it's taking me a lot of effort and stress to get my heart into it. Sigh. It'll happen, but it's such a waste of time, and you know how valuable that can be. Sigh, sigh.

Maybe I should just give this up, go home, and play Rome: Total War.

So, so

Today was okay. Spent most of today (3pm to 6pm) cleaning out the house; then Leonard came over, and there was a lot of interesting argument on various subjects (culminating in one long, extended one on arranged marriages.

Then I managed to win the Battle of Telamon in Rome: Total War on my second attempt through =). Good fun.

Tomorrow, I'll be back at my desk, code monkey-ing my way through Java or, if I'm lucky, Perl/Tk; trying desperately to finish my program within the deadlines, writing and debugging code fast and furiously, while handling any other non-TaxonDNA or non-computer issues which might crop up. But today, today I am a Gaulish commander, glad of victory on the battle field, but limping away from a terrible ambush by the might of the Roman army.

Strange dream

Had a very nice long sleep yesterday night, topped off by waking up at a semi-sane hour (9:30pm). Dream was weird, though. London trip, apartment mates, lost cameras, fiddling with phones. Weird. Do I need dreams to get my geek hits now?

Year of the Pig

And here we go, the Year of the Pig is finally upon us. A fairly inauspicious start to the year for me, anywho: spent all of yesterday night up coughing, ended up reading various books and then playing Far Cry Instincts, which is good, brainless fun. Then I took a nice, hot bath, and went to sleep around 7am. As per standard rules, I then woke up at 5pm, several weird dreams (which I can no longer remember) flowing around my head. Still, I feel better - and on the off chance that the cause is the hot shower, I'm taking another one in a bit. Then? I dunno. I'd like to go walking around, I really would, but where? And why? Of course, if I stay at home, I can look forward to staying up all night all over again, which is decidedly not fun.

Anyway - the nice thing about a holiday is that such decisions can be arbitrarily pushed back as needed =). So: hot bath first, baki sab uske bad. Happy New Year, everybody!

Motes

Just want to register my disdain at still being up at 7am (stupid cough keeping me then, then screwing up my sleep schedule so it's hard to get back to normal), my anger for the programming bugs in Rome: Total War which plague me to the ends of the world, but somehow don't affect anybody else playing that game I know, my love for those who called me up to wish me happy birthday (which it was yesterday, on Friday the 16th, according to the lunar/Hindu/Marathi calendar), gladness that I'm finally well and truely recovering from sicknesses and hopefully well on the path to normality, hooray-ness that Chinese New Year is here at last, a fantastic time for us non-Chinese Singaporeans to have fun, and the morbid recollection that atleast one of the two computers I bought in the last year (I refer to wakywaky, Shruti's old computer) has many strange and fascinating issues, from the power randomly going off to my (custom) Linux kernel refusing to boot up properly on it (yet); it should, however, be noted that Ubuntu worked almost perfectly from the get-go, except for X-Windows (which I'll need if I'm going to play games/write software on this thing) and the power (which I'll need if I'm going to keep it running at all hours as a server machine). So, sigh. I'll potter around with it a bit more, and if there's no dice, I'll just give up on it, move on to Bathsheba, and, err, I don't know - keep it on or a momento, or something? Or just something to tinker with. After the frustrations I go through with R:TW, it's such a blessed relief to know that the computer will (probably) not just up and out, all by itself, for no good reason - that some level of tinkering, googling, and what have you, *should* provide a reasonable answer, and teach me something new in the process. Anybody can lead a rag-tag band of 300+ Britons against a city protecting 600+ Frenchmen - but how many people can correctly determine the one Linux kernel command-line option which stop the kernel from going off into a panic loop, thus allowing you to concentrate on the next kernel panic? Not too many, I'm guessing!

And, by the way, have you seen Get A First Life? Very cute, that.

Happiness

I'm happy. Yes, I'm also sick, lonely, bored, tired, sleepy, awake, restless, irritated, overworked, and just plain angsty. But I'm happy? No particular reason. I took the day off from work because I was sick, and spent most of it lying around being sick. And yet, and yet - I had a nice session of Rome, watched a couple of interesting things on TV (including part of St. Elmo's Fire and Mythbusters - the one where they try breaking into an office using Hollywood techniques), and am ending the day feeling ... happy and fulfilled. The friends who that Valentine's Day note on my blog went out to seem to have mostly made it through okay =), and ... yeah, that's about it. Nothing bad, something possibly good, so it's a scratch above the zero line in the final call. Which is fine by me.

Away for a while

Feel like shit. No exaggeration. Couldn't sleep properly last night, then woke up with a sore throat, nausea, and general weakness (as well as some remnants of yesterday's illness). Either this is really the third 'sick' day I've had in something like two or three weeks (although, in all fairness, the first two days were pretty straightforward food poisoning).

If I feel this sick tomorrow, I'm taking the day off. Seriously. This just ain't worth it no mo.

P.S. To all my friends who are having love/crush/relationship issues this Valentine's day: HOPE IT GETS BETTER!

A good day

Very nice indeed. Had nice chats with lots of old friends; got a coupla interesting things done; walked back home over a long chat with Back Home.

Pity about the lack of work. And the being up all night. And so on.

OMFG write-only code!

The brilliant thing about Perl is the idea that not only is there more than one way to do it, but you, the programmer, are free to use the best way to express your problem.

Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. And there are always people who will take things way, way, waaaay too far.

SheepShaved

We're officially giving up on getting SheepShaver working, since we managed to get enough old Macs from all around NUS that we don't need to get PAUP* working on Intel Macs. If you're looking for how to go about it, you could look up the non-official homepage, this great article, or ask on the forums.

And, very gratuiously, Merry Old Inn from the Fellowship of the Ring.

Well, well

It's Sunday late night, and I'm feeling better. My weakness for the last few days seems to be dropping off somewhat, perhaps thanks to my walk tonight. Been clicking photos fairly wildly lately, I've been putting it up fairly regularly (tonight's batch of 73 photos from today and yesterday are being copied onto my laptop even as we speak). I've also started thinking seriously about Pan, after some encouragement from Matt on DocForge (which, much to my disappointment, has gone ad-supported; but I'm new here, so I'll wait before I complain. There's actually every possibility that Matt will get the advertising looking good; let's see).

There's been some mail-bopping around in my family; obviously, since everybody's got my Yahoo address, and Yahoo's out-of-office facility is extremely dodgy, nobody's actually *updated* their e-mail address yet. Luckily, my dad forwarded it on to me, or I might never have known.

It's nice to hear from the family at all, since I somehow don't end up chatting with any of them very often - my complete lack of social skills, I guess. I'd like to, and I wonder if this will be the start of something interesting. Or, you know, at any rate - fun.

Tabs

Because I have waaaaay too many tabs open, here's some of the tabs on my browser right now (if I should eventually want to get back to them):

So it goes. It's nice being in touch with a lot of people from all over all at once (Tarun, Rivka, Amu, and Arijit, to note a few). Also was up late watching The Return of the King - yes, all six hours of the extended DVDs. Good stuff. Pity I'll be woozy all day tomorrow, though.

Is this it?

Excuse the mood, but then, here is the situation:

Then again, I'm lying on my bed, snot pouring out like its going out of style, so I guess I have the right to be depressed. Sigh. It'll be better tomorrow. Also, my birthday is coming up.

Could be worse, I guess. Check out this chick. Also: if I'm going to be worried I'll "never find true love", now is a horrible time to do that - I have a very annoying habit of getting major crushes in end-Feb/early-Mar. So, y'know, wait until mid-April or so, and then accept that it's all overs oh noes etc.

Finally!

That stupid photograph of Sue the dinosaur mould has finally dropped off the top of my list of my "most popular photos (sorted by interestingness)" on Flickr. Its position has been taken by the much more interesting Eastern Express Highway. In other news, my photo of Ruby Pan has had 400 views, way more than any other I've got online, despite the fact that t3htarik still has a much better photograph of her (the importance of metadata, I guess!).

I still feel really, really weak (not to mention horribly bored: lying around all day watching TV can do that to you), but hopefully my illness will pass by tomorrow. Watched a lot of Yes Minister, and ate a lot, and lay around doing very little.

I also got a clock/radio/alarm thingie, so I might actually wake up on time, as well as learn a little as I listen to BBC World while blogging at night. Like right now.

Anyways, sleepytime. Seeya all after I go comatose for a few hours, hallucinate vividly, and then maybe suffer amnesia about the whole incident.

I had

yet another one of those dreams again. Like, the one I get a week and a bit after somebody dies. If I could be breathlessly superstitious, I could claim that it is the 13th day after they die that this happens =) - who knows?

New month resolution

My new month resolution is to leave more messages on other people's blogs (possibly extend this to leave more messages and/or edits lying around on Wikipedia, too). Considering that Blogger is having intermittant server errors problems all day today, perhaps today wasn't the best day to start working on this ...

Little less painful

The President of India is online again. Brought along a whole bunch of interesting people, though, and to talk about terrorism to boot. I wonder if Amu will have any comments on their answers.

Some amazingly good advice on writing murder mysteries. CSI writers, take note!

... and ... that's it. Feel awful today. Woke up late, not getting much done, majorly anti-social, &c., &c. Hopefully I'll talk to y'alls when things feel a little less painful.
